Meals on Wheels of Long Beach (MOWLB) volunteers provide warm and loving contact by delivering meals and spending a few minutes with individuals who may not have the ability to engage in any other way.

When you volunteer for Meals on Wheels of Long Beach you’re doing your part to guarantee meals are delivered to the more than 600 people across the Long Beach, Signal Hill, Lakewood and Leisure World, Seal Beach areas. You can volunteer to deliver meals once a week, once a month, with a friend, with a group or on your own – whatever works best for you!

Delivering meals is also a great social activity – you can do it with a friend or a group and you’ll get to know your neighbors who also volunteer with our organization. Every time you volunteer with MOWLB you are helping those who need our services to remain independent.

F.A.Q

  • Please complete a volunteer application, found on this website, and one of our site managers will be in contact with you to schedule an orientation.

  • You arrive at the site office to gather your route materials, check-in with the site manager for any special route notes or instructions, pick up the route meal carriers (ice chest & thermal bag), then follow the instructions outlined in the delivery route book that will include mapping or directions to each delivery location.

  • Depending on the number of clients, a route can take anywhere from one to two hours.

  • Deliveries are made Monday through Friday from 10:30am to 12:30pm.

  • It is entirely up to you. You can deliver as often as you like; once a week, twice a week, once every other week, once a month, whatever is comfortable for you. We are happy to accommodate your schedule and grateful for your time and care with our clients.

  • We are happy to have you share your experience with us by bringing a friend along. We are always in need of new volunteers. Please be sure to let our staff know you will be bringing a friend.

  • For your protection and safety, there will always be another volunteer on the route with you. Our routes are delivered by teams of two, a “Friendly Visitor” and a driver.

  • We have three offices: Downtown Long Beach, East Long Beach, and North Long Beach. You may pick the office nearest to you.

  • The “Friendly Visitor” volunteer takes the meals (lunch, dinner, dessert & beverage put into a delivery bag) to the clients’ door, knocks or rings the doorbell, and announces they are from Meals on Wheels. When the client or caregiver comes to the door you may simply hand them the meals and have a brief friendly conversation at the door, or some clients may invite you in for a visit. It’s really up to you and the client, whatever feels comfortable for both of you. As you are visiting, we ask that you observe your surroundings and make a mental note any observable changes in the client’s well-being. This will be further explained during your orientation. As you continue delivering to the clients on your regular route you will become more and more familiar with each client and hopefully many friendships will develop.

  • We are always in need of those who have skills in marketing, social media, storytelling, photography, event planning and other specialized areas. If you wish to help us in a different capacity, please contact our main office at (562) 439-5000.
